This species is known only from a single subpopulation of approximately 50 large individuals, scattered across an area of approximately 5 km wide. A survey of the population in 1998 found that only a small number of individuals were actually reproductive, with few seedlings or saplings noted (Hodel 1998; 2009). The number of mature individuals is therefore likely to be much smaller than 50. Given that this occurs in montane areas at the bottom of steep slopes, it may be that some individuals have been overlooked due to their inaccessibility or remote locality. It was noted by Hodel (1998) that a photograph of a palm published in 1973 from southern Thailand could have represented this species, but no further work to survey this species is known to have been carried out. It should be possible to spot individuals of this species on high resolution aerial photographs (Anders Barford pers. comm. 2023) and this method could be used to try to identify new individuals. Given the apparent low rate of reproduction within the population, it is inferred that the population will be slowly declining, due to an insufficient rate of replacement of adult trees following their natural death.

This species is found within Khao Luang National Park, which appears from satellite imagery to have extensive intact forest remaining. However, there has been encroachment from Kiriwong into the lower slopes of the park caused by replacement of forest by plantations, but this has so far only reached up to around 800 m asl (Round et al. 2006). Small plantation patches are visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth 2023) within 5 to 8 km of where this species occurs. Though not currently considered to be a threat to this species, continued and unchecked encroachment into forests at higher elevations could potentially pose a serious threat to this species in the future should deforestation activities reach the site at which it grows.

There are five ex situ collections of this species held by botanic gardens worldwide (BGCI 2023). The only known subpopulation occurs within Khao Luang National Park (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023).
