État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
There is no explicit population information for this species but NatureServe (2018) states the species is 'apparently secure', with local rarity in Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana, so population is assumed to be stable.
In the future the population may be at risk from the impacts of climate change. In their 2017 study, Potter et al. categorised the species in 'Vulnerability class C- High vulnerability, with potential persistence.'

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
The species should be monitored for the impact of climate change which may become a threat in the future (Potter et al. 2017). It may also be at risk from genetic intogression with other native Carya spp. which this species can hybridise with.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
This species is reported from 12 ex situ collections (BGCI 2018). It is also assessed as G4- Apparently Secure for NatureServe (2018) and locally endangered by the state government of Indiana (USDA 2018). Monitoring the species in the wake of global warming and climate change would be valuable as it has been identified as potentially vulnerable to these changes.
