Within Mexico the subpopulation is experiencing decline from threats including, illegal logging, fire and with a few sites affected by agricultural expansion. Within the United States the subpopulations are considered stable.

In Mexico, the remaining localities are threatened by fires and illegal logging. There is also loss of native habitat in some sites due to agricultural activities and expansion. The species is not threatened within its range in the United States.

At this time there are no conservation actions in place. Carya myristiciformis is an uncommon species that is difficult to identify due to the diversity of hickories in the environments where nutmeg hickory occurs. This taxon is ranked G4 - apparently secure by NatureServe (NatureServe 2018). This species is found in 20 ex situ collections (BGCI 2018). In Mexico some individuals are found in the National Park Cumbres de Monterrey.
