This species is very rare. It is known from one single location on Santo Antão and the total number of individuals is estimated to be less than 50. Its population seems to be decreasing and is severely fragmented.

Carex antoniensis is under extreme threat due to its very restricted distribution. Its habitat is threatened by agricultural practice and the wetlands where it occurs are used for growing yams. If water availability decreases the species will quickly become extinct. It is also threatened by grazing.
