État de la populationExpert
The population is considered stable, though it may decline if development and loss of habitat continue. The species seems to tolerate disturbance since subpopulations are found in highly disturbed sites in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Description complète des menacesExpert

The main threat to the species may be use of the species and the loss of habitat due to deforestation, development and agricultural expansion, as monitored by Global Forest Watch (2022). The healthy subpopulation of the species in Los Haitises, Dominican Republic, is under threat of its natural habitat being converted to oil palm plantations. The small subpopulations in Puerto Rico are under threat of road construction and development that impacts the hydrology and seasonal flood dynamics.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
Peguero et al. (2015) assessed the species as Endangered, but did not adequately support their criteria based on its distribution, threats and population status. Zona et al. (2007) recommended a status of Least Concern, though he agreed with continued threatened status of the species in Puerto Rico. This is supported by the most recent review of the species by USFWS (2016). The species has been successfully established on private and public land holdings as part of the species recovery program on the island.

The species is represented in several protected areas of Haiti, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico – both public and private. The species is found in numerous botanical gardens and conservancies throughout the tropics. There is a species recovery program in Puerto Rico and the species' population undergoes an evaluation every five years.
