This species is listed on the Annex II of the European Habitats Directive and it is protected in many countries. It is classed as strictly protected in Hungary and Critically Endangered on the national red list, it is Critically Endangered in Poland and the only location where the species occurs in Germany is within a protected area. No global information is available for this species, though herbarium records from East Africa are from lakes that are now badly polluted. More research is needed in order to determine global population trends and global threats.
