This species is confined to mountainous bogs and marshes in China and the eastern Himalayas. In China it occurs as small subpopulations in restricted habitats. There is no information on population trends in other countries of its range. However, since several studies reveal a clear negative trend in China, it is estimated that the global population may be also declining. The subpopulation in Taiwan has less than 50 individuals (Gituru et al. 2002).

The diminished populations of this species could be attributed to several factors including habitat degradation due to human activities, low seed set, little seed bank contribution to population growth and maintenance, a restricted habitat and poor competitive abilities.
