The total population is approximately 100 mature individuals. The available information is based upon herbarium records or records from other general surveys, and a targeted survey undertaken in 2008 between Marrawah and Temma. This is likely to be a conservative estimate as numbers of plants have only been determined for five of the eight known subpopulations and there have been no dedicated surveys for this species. The three sites for which no population counts are available are associated with private land, unallocated Crown land and leased Crown land, all of which do not appear to have been surveyed since the date of the herbarium record. One of these sites, the Conical Rocks site, which is the most southerly by approximately 54 km, is in a relatively unfrequented area, raising the possibility that more colonies remain to be found (Threatened Species Section 2006). It is not possible to assess past or likely future changes in numbers from existing information. The maximum number of plants seen at any one location is 40 (Threatened Species Unit 2001). 

Although the estimated total number of mature individuals of this species is very low, there is no evidence to suggest that the number has declined or will continue to decline. The subpopulation with the largest number of mature individuals occurs within the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area (Threatened Species Section 2006). Despite the fact that this conservation area has been identified as suitable for a range of recreational and commercial developments, some protection is afforded to the species through the application of management guidelines and codes of practice (Threatened Species Section 2006). There are no details, either published or unpublished, concerning reported declines in subpopulations of this species with the exception of the presumed extinction of the northern subpopulation which was last reported in 1841 (Threatened Species Section 2006).

Regional Priority Actions
The following regional priority recovery and threat abatement actions can be done to support the recovery of the Windswept Spider-orchid.

Habitat Loss, Disturbance and Modification

  • Monitor known populations to identify key threats.
  • Monitor the progress of recovery, including the effectiveness of management actions and the need to adapt them if necessary.
  • Identify populations of high conservation priority.
  • Ensure there is no disturbance in areas where the Windswept Spider-orchid occurs, excluding necessary actions to manage the conservation of the species.
  • Investigate formal conservation arrangements, management agreements and covenants on private land, and for crown and private land investigate inclusion in reserve tenure if possible.
Trampling, Browsing or Grazing

  • Develop and implement a stock management plan for roadside verges and travelling stock routes.

Fire

  • Implement the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area: Fire Management Plan (Parks and Wildlife Service, 2003).
  • Identify appropriate intensity and interval of fire to promote seed germination and/or vegetation regeneration.
  • Where appropriate provide maps of known occurrences to local and state Rural Fire Services and seek inclusion of mitigative measures in bush fire risk management plan(s), risk register and/or operation maps.

Conservation Information

  • Raise awareness of the Windswept Spider-orchid within the local community.
  • Frequently engage with private landholders and land managers responsible for the land on which populations occur and encourage these key stakeholders to contribute to the implementation of conservation management actions.

Enable Recovery of Additional Sites and/or Populations

  • Collect and store seed, germ plasm and mychorrizae, ensuring appropriate phytohygiene protocols are observed.
  • Investigate options for linking, enhancing or establishing additional populations.
  • Implement national translocation protocols (Vallee et al. 2004) if establishing additional populations is considered necessary and feasible.


Local Priority Actions
The following local priority recovery and threat abatement actions can be done to support the recovery of the Windswept Spider-orchid.

Habitat Loss, Disturbance and Modification

  • Control access routes to suitably constrain public access to known sites on public land.
  • Suitably control and manage access on private land and other land tenure.
  • Undertake survey work in suitable habitat and potential habitat to locate any additional populations/occurrences/remnants.
  • Minimise adverse impacts from land use at known sites.
  • Manage any disruptions to water flows.
  • Protect populations of the listed species through the development of conservation agreements and/or covenants.

Trampling, Browsing or Grazing

  • If livestock grazing occurs in the area, ensure land owners/managers use an appropriate management regime and density that does not detrimentally affect this species, outside the growing season.
  • Where appropriate, manage total grazing pressure at important/significant sites through exclusion fencing or other barriers.

Fire

  • Implement an appropriate fire management regime for local populations.

This list does not necessarily encompass all actions that may be of benefit to the Windswept Spider-orchid, but highlights those that are considered to be of highest priority at the time of preparing the Conservation Advice.

Research Priorities
Research priorities that would inform future regional and local priority actions include:

  • Design and implement a monitoring program or, if appropriate, support and enhance existing programmes.
  • More precisely assess population size, distribution, ecological requirements and the relative impacts of threatening processes.
  • Undertake survey work in suitable habitat and potential habitat to locate any additional populations/occurrences/remnants.
  • Undertake seed germination and/or vegetative propagation trials to determine the requirements for successful establishment, including mycorrhizal association trials.
  • Undertake genetic analyses to:
  1. assess current gene flow (using markers and analyses capable of distinguishing population divergence on an evolutionary timescale, from that which might be due to more recent impacts); and 
  2. identify populations with low genetic diversity that might benefit from artificial introduction of genetic material from other populations from which they have relatively recently diverged.
