Bulbophyllum apertiflorum is known only from the type subpopulation, and was collected more than 65 years ago. It has not been collected again and, according to its elevation range, the species might be threatened by human activities in its habitat. This situation leads us to infer that the current population trend of the species is decreasing. The number of individuals is not known and cannot be estimated since the species is epiphyte.

Bulbophyllum apertiflorum is known only from the type subpopulation. The species was collected near the summit of Orosun, in Idanre Hills, more than 65 years ago in Ondo province (Nigeria). It has not been collected since and, considering its elevation range, we infer that its habitat is threatened by human activities such as tourism, small-holder grazing and ranching in this beautiful part of the country.
