It is considered to be an abundant plant with a large and stable population. This species currently does not have survival problems. The many fertile collections suggest that there are still a reasonable number of healthy populations.

In portions of the range land use change threats the species, adult individuals are kept when the land is clear for agriculture and ranching, but all juveniles and seedlings are removed, therefore there is no recruitment. However, in many other areas of its range the populations are abundant and healthy.

There are 4 ex situ collections (BGCI 2021). This species was evaluated as threatened (V) in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998), and 1998 (VU) by the IUCN Red List (Quero 1998). This species occurs in National Parks "Insurgente José María Morelos" (Michoacán), and "Grutas de Cacahuamilpa" (Guerrero).
