This species is recorded mainly from the coast of Senegal. Most specimens were collected near Dakar in the 1960s. Later Vanden Berghen (1999) found some sites of the species in the region of Casamance. The small subpopulations were found in the bordering area of Guinea Bissau near the coast. It was collected in a riverbed of Boavista (Cape Verde archipelago) in 1980. A small subpopulation has recently (in 2014) been discovered in Dakar (A. Mesterházy pers. obs. 2014) and this is considered the only extant subpopulation of the species.

The most significant threats are associated with habitat degradation as a consequence of increasing human activities (due to urban expansion), establishing rice fields near the swamp, extraction of water for human use, especially irrigation (A. Mesterhazy pers. obs. 2014) and the increasing occurrence of droughts.
