This species is found at five localities in Sarawak and Sabah, Malaysia. Each subpopulation has one to few individuals. The subpopulations are scarce and far from each other.

Boesenbergia variegata has the potential to be an ornamental plant due to the beautiful foliage. This species is found in both protected areas and land owned by indigenous people. Therefore, surveys are recommended to get more information on the population trend. Awareness programme to the villagers should be carried out for the villagers to conserve their land and prevent from land conversion. In addition, ex situ conservation for this species should be carried out.
