État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
Although the species is rare in the Greater Antilles, it occurs in numerous subpopulations and some of those are on protected lands (Ackerman (1995, 2014). Five subpopulations are documented in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, Florida. A couple of subpopulations in Florida are regularly monitored but not consistently located every year. However, these subpopulations are still considered extant since plants can remain dormant for years. Ackerman (1995, 2014) described the species as being locally common in the Maricao Forest Reserve of Puerto Rico.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Conservation actions currently in place in Florida include monitoring subpopulations for status of threats, site condition and abundance of plants. Conservation actions in other parts of the species’ range are not known. General recommended conservation actions include reviewing the most critical threats, considering the feasibility of their removal, and determining how their removal will impact the quality of habitat for the species. Specific recommendations from Florida Natural Areas Inventory include burning pine rockland every three to seven years to create mosaic of habitats, eradicating exotic pest plants, and purchasing and protecting remaining fragments of rockland (Gann and Woodmansee 2014).
In South Florida, four subpopulations occur in three conservation areas (Deering Estate at Cutler, Everglades National Park, and National Key Deer Refuge). The species also occurs in Maricao Forest Reserve in Puerto Rico (Ackerman 2014).
This species is listed on CITES Appendix II (CITES 2015).
