Betula pumila is a common species across its broad geographic range. However, there are no hard data on population numbers due to it not being an important commercial species. 

Ashburner and McAllister (2013) - consider this species to be more or less confined to the north eastern corner of North America, perhaps as relatively isolated populations.

No known threats have been documented for Betula pumila. NatureServe (2013) ranks this species secure (G5), however populations in Illinois, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are Critically Imperiled, those in Yukon, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ohio, New York, Maine, Iowa, Idaho and Connecticut are Imperiled and those in New Brunswick are Vulnerable.
