This species has been in cultivation for about 100 years. Although this species is self-incompatible, when plants of different clones are grown together, seeds with a high percentage of viability are produced. Cuttings of seedlings root easily. For this species to be maintained in cultivation it is important that breeding populations of more than one clone should be established in at least one garden. This has been done at Liverpool University Botanic Garden since 1988. Betula potaninii is assessed as Least Concern in the Chinese Red List (Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Chinese Academy of Sciences 2014). The species is reported from 23 ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). The species is found within a protected area (Protected Planet 2017).
