It is a very common species throughout its range. However, there are no hard data on population numbers due to it being common and not an important timber species. Betula nigra is most abundant in the southeastern United States.

There are no known threats that are or will adversely affect the sustainability of this species in the foreseeable future. Climate change will extirpate this species at its western distribution limits but this will be offset with it northern range limits expanding north, northeast from its current northern range limits into adjacent Canada and New England. 

This species is listed as globally secure by NatureServe.

The principal leaf disease of this species is anthracnose leaf blight caused by Gloeosproium betularam. Christmas mistletoe (Phoradendron serotinum) is a common pest in the South. It is considered borer resistant and is not very vulnerable to deer browsing.
