This species is reported as held in five ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). This species is self-incompatible, therefore successful establishment in cultivation will probably depend on the maintenance of at least one breeding population to provide viable seed for wide distribution. A lack of suitable close relatives to use as stocks for grafting, or shrubby habit, make grafting an unsuitable method of propagation, and cuttings of mature plants may not root easily. Successful cultivation of seedlings is reported, with some individuals growing to 4 m in 10 years. Despite noted threats, the Lijiang Shan is one of the best preserved areas of China and many parts of this mountain range are a National Park.
