This species is a widespread and commonly encountered tree. The largest subpopulations occur in southern Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada; and in northern New England and New York; and the upper peninsula of Michigan, United States.

There are no known major threats that are or will adversely affect this species in the foreseeable future. Climate change may extirpate the species at its southern and western distribution but this will be offset with its northern range limits expanding in Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
