The population size of this species is unknown. However it is described as common in swampy areas (Prasaja 2015, Prasaja 2019) and as locally numerous in both wet and dry regions (Brink et al. 2016).

On Java, this species has been recorded from three localities which appear to still have intact primary forest, though the remainder of the localities are in areas that have been almost entirely deforested (Global Forest Watch 2020). Java is a very densely populated island and as a result only 7% of the island still has remaining forest cover, with most existing as isolated patches such as on volcanoes (Whitten et al. 1997, Nijman 2013), which is the case two of the remaining forested localities. The third locality is situated in Ujong Kulon National Park. This species is highly likely to have declined at the remaining localities which have experienced severe deforestation for agriculture, settlements and plantations. On Sumatra, there has similarly been extensive deforestation within this species' distribution. Primary forest cover in South Sumatra declined by nearly 59% between 1990–2010, largely due to the rapid expansion of forestry and oil palm plantations (Margono et al. 2012).

This species has been recorded from Ujong Kulon National Park in Java and from Way Kambas National Park and Bukit Duabelas National Park in Sumatra. It has been recorded as being cultivated at Bogor Botanic Garden.
