So far, only one subpopulation of Benstonea fortuita is known, which is at Gn. Lumaku Forest Reserve in Tenom district, Sabah. Only few individuals were seen during the discovery of this new species (Callmander and Buerki 2016). The population trend is inferred to be stable, due to the location being inside a protected area and there is no continuing decline suspected.

Due to its single locality, this species very susceptible to any threats and habitat disturbance such as forest fire. If this threat were to become active the species would rapidly become threatened.
