Population size is unknown but this species is one of the widespread palm species on Grande-Terre in New Caledonia and is naturally abundant in forest and becomes the dominant understorey species in disturbed forest.

The population does not appear to be threatened even though some subpopulations are impacted by fire and mines (Pascal et al. 2008).

Basselinia pancheri is protected by legislation in Province Nord. B. pancheri occurs in seventeen protected areas: Mont Panié, Parc de la Rivière Bleue, La Dumbéa, Mont Do, Forêt cachée, Barrage de Yaté, Montagne des sources, Haute Dumbéa, Forêt de Saille, Pic du Pin, Pic du grand Kaori, Massif du Kouakoué, Foret Nord, Nodela, Haute Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine, and Vallée de la Thy. No seeds are known to have been collected for ex situ storage, but several living collections are known to occur in botanic gardens.
