Main identified threats are linked to seeds destruction by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs, while seeds are collected for sale to the international horticultural trade.

It is cultivated at Lavoix's garden in Nouméa. Prospection in Mandjelia to Ignambi areas are needed to better evaluate the conservation status of this species. Plateau de Dogny seems to be another location to be surveyed to check on the species. Furthermore herbarium specimens of Basselinia gracilis in Nouméa need to be rechecked in comparison with B. eriostachys.
