Balaka streptostachys

The main threats to this palm is from logging. It is found along a logging road, and the surrounding area is severely disturbed and has already been heavily logged, which is likely to continue. Due to its highly restricted distribution it is also susceptible to single stochastic events such as hurricanes. There is also low seedling recruitment.

This species is not recorded in any known ex situ collection worldwide. Conservation recommendations for this species include: i) additional seed collections, ii) propagation for establishing ex situ populations, iii) species recovery and management plan (possibly including enhancement planting), and iv) awareness and engagement of land owners and regulatory authorities. Research is also needed into ecology, propagation and ecosystem service.
