The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations, especially due to the increasing motivation for seeking land for pineapple plantations.

This species is known from some protected areas in Costa Rica, such as Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado, Estación Biológica La Selva, Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo. In Costa Rica, two disjunct subspecies occur, Bactris militaris ssp. neomilitaris on the Caribbean slope and Bactris militaris ssp. militaris on the Pacific slope; the B. militaris ssp. militaris habitat (type locality) is very restricted, fragmented and is under high risk due its a small area without any protection or conservation.
