État de la populationExpert
There is no detailed population data for this species, although it has been noted as very uncommon but widely distributed (Adams 1972). According to Salzman and Judd (1995), Bactris jamaicana is widely distributed on lower slopes of mountains and upland plateaus in the John Crow Mountains, Cockpit Country, and Central Plateau, but no extensive subpopulations are known.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The species is widespread and faces several direct and indirect threats across its range. Long-term disturbance has reduced the occurrence of B. jamaicana in many low-elevation forests to small, scattered subpopulations (Salzman and Judd 1995). The species is not used but habitats in which it is found are undergoing conversion to farming, and general degradation due to encroachment over time. Habitat quality is also degraded through competition with the fern Gleichenella pectinata.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species occurs in Mason River Nature Preserve, Mount Diablo Forest Reserve, and the Cockpit Country Protected Area. An invasive species project is being implemented at the Mason River Protected Area to mitigate the impacts of a native problematic species, and may benefit Bactris jamaicana. It is held in at least one ex situ conservation collection (BGCI 2024). In other areas, the species has no formal protection, though it may derive some protective benefit from the characteristic spines on leaves and trunks of the palm.
