This species is known from four locations, defined by the four known localities that are all threatened by the conversion of habitat. The exact population size is not known.

This species occurs solely in the Bahia coastal forest ecoregion which has been given a rating of Critical/Endangered (WWF 2001). The major threat to this habitat is the conversion of forest into pasture for raising cattle. There are 5,000 km2 of Atlantic forest associated with cocoa plantation that might be converted to pasture (Araujo et al. 1998). In southern Bahia where this species resides, only 0.4% of the original forest remains (Thomas et al. 1998).

A subpopulation occurs in the Discovery Coast Atlantic Forest Reserve. It is not listed on CITES and seeds from this species are not present in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK.
