Bactris fissifrons

All of the habitats in which this species resides are relatively stable but some general threats to the habitats include: expansion of cocoa production, logging and mining operations, and cattle ranching, which have resulted in large deforested areas. Colonization along the rivers is also taking a toll and often results in overhunting and collection of many forest species. The whole Ecuadorian Amazon has been subject to oil and gas exploration and virtually all of the Napo riverine area in Ecuador is open for oil leasing, according to Stattersfield (1998). The construction of roads by oil companies has resulted in deforestation, displacement of the indigenous peoples, and colonization of the interior by peasant farmers (WWF 2001).

This species is present in a number of protected areas in Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil. It is not listed on CITES and seeds from this species are not present in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK. It is listed as Rare and Vulnerable at the national level in Peru, Colombia and Brazil in the 1997 Red List of Threatened Plants (Walter and Gillet 1998). In a more recent assessment in Colombia, this palm was given a conservation status of Least Concern (Bernal and Galeano 2006).
