The taxon is potentially threatened by deforestation due to land use change for agricultural activities and forest fires. However, this species has been recorded from protected areas so it is expected that it does not present survival problems.

There are 24 ex situ collections (BGCI 2021). In Belize, it is found in the Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve, and Forest Reserves Columbia and Deep River.  In Mexico, it occurs in the Natural Monument "Bonampak" (Chiapas),  National Park "Palenque" (Chiapas); and Biosphere Reserves "Los Tuxtlas" (Veracruz), "Selva El Ocote" (Chiapas), and "Montes Azules" (Chiapas). In Guatemala, it occurs in the Biosphere Reserves "Maya" and "Sierra de las Minas". In Honduras, it is also found in the National Park "Pico Bonito" and in the Botanical Garden "Lancetilla".
