This species is common in disturbed areas across Amazonia, being particularly abundant in and around Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil), where it occurs in densities of around 30 trees/hectare in disturbed areas and up to 43 trees/hectare in secondary forests (Régis da Costa et al. 2011). The species is rare in primary forests (Janick 2007), only occurring at higher densities where growth of larger populations have been encouraged by human intervention and fire. In primary forests, densities tend to be around 10 trees/hectare (Régis da Costa et al. 2011). Many wild stands of this species are now managed in a state of semi-domestication (Clement 1999).

There are no known direct threats to this species. This species is known to thrive in disturbed areas and though some landowners perceive it to be a weed, many will allow large stands to form in areas under shifting cultivation, due to the future income the mature trees can generate. As the demand for its fruit grows, it may experience an increase in population. Palm heart extraction may present a threat to this species, due to the destructive nature of the harvesting process (Balick 1985), though this does not appear to be a common use of the species.
