This species' habitat was previously heavily encroached by agriculture. High human population growth in the surroundings and illegal activities like harvesting plant resources (bamboo) for building, agriculture, and firewood have been identified as threats. Extended dry periods and uncontrolled fire could impact this species severely.

This species has been found within the Kahuzi-Biega-National Park, on Mt. Kahuzi, Democratic Republic of Congo (Fischer 1993), and in the Mgahinga gorilla National Park in Uganda, as well as in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
