Threats to this species differ somewhat among the different subpopulations.

On La'au Ridge the major threats are pigs (Sus domesticus) and the following non-native plant species: Juncus planifolius, Sacciolepis indica, Schizachyrium condensatum, Rubus rosifolius, Ageratum conyzoides, Erechtites valerianifolia, Conyza bonariensis, Emilia fosbergii, Erigeron karvinskianum, and Youngia japonica.

At Kamo'oloa, pigs and rats (Rattus rattus) are the predominate animal threats while Rubus rosifolius, Cyperus meyenianus, Axonopus fissifolius, Clidemia hirta, and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa are the major non-native plant threats.

In Kekoiki Rubus rosifolius and Paspalum conjugatum are major threats, as well as landslides.

In Waikoali, pigs, Passiflora mollissima, Paspalum urvillei, Rubus rosifolius, and Erigeron karvinskianum are the main threats.

At Kawaikini: pigs, rats, goats, and slugs are the major animal threats. Threatening, non-native plant species include Clidemia hirta, Rubus rosifolius, Axonopus fissifolius, Juncus planifolius, Cyperus meyenianus, Paspalum conjugatum, Psidium cattleianum, Melastoma malabathricum, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Cyathea cooperi, and Sacciolepis indica.

This taxon is not protected under either state or federal endangered species laws or acts. Conservation actions have been limited to monitoring and collection of herbarium vouchers. One collection of 300 seeds is stored at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauaʻi.
