Areca whitfordii is known only from six localities. It is unknown if the species is locally rare or abundant. Further research is needed to account for the number of mature individuals remaining in the wild. Although the population size is uncertain, because of the unavailability of baseline data, it is inferred that it has declined due to continuous loss of natural forests (GFW 2019).

Areca whitfordii is primarily threatened by land conversion and habitat degradation caused by commodity-driven deforestation, shifting cultivation, large-scale forestry operations and urbanization. A significant loss of tree cover (about 339,549 ha) was calculated in its range based on data analysis from the Global Forest Watch (2019).

The species is not listed in the Philippine Red List and therefore not protected by a law against illegal collection from the wild (DENR-BMB 2017). Subpopulations of the species in Cagayan and Isabela are protected in situ. Areca whitfordii is found to be occurring in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, a declared Protected Area supported by the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS Act). Lastly, the species is cultivated in Makiling Botanic Gardens for ex situ conservation (Fernando 2009).
