Areca hutchinsoniana is known only from five localities usually in primary forests at low elevation from 30–100 m asl. The species has a restricted distribution range which indicates the population size is small. However, further research is needed to account the number of mature individuals remaining in the wild. Although the population size is uncertain because of the unavailability of baseline data, it is inferred that it has declined due to continuous loss of natural forests (GFW 2019).

Areca hutchinsoniana is primarily threatened by land conversion and habitat degradation caused by agricultural land expansion, establishment of plantations and shifting cultivation. A significant loss of natural forests (about 630 ha) was reported in its range between 2001 and 2018, based on the analysis of data from Global Forest Watch (2019). Less than 50% of the total land area of each locality/province remained a natural forest the majority of the islands where the species is found are now covered by plantations.

The species is previously assessed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List and Vulnerable in DAO 2017–11 or the Updated National List of Threatened Species in the Philippines (Madulid 1998, DENR-BMB 2017). Through this administrative order pursuant to Republic Act no. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, illegal and excessive tampering of the species from its natural habitats, together with other species specified therein, are inhibited. Its unauthorized utilization, trade, and disturbances made in its natural habitats are punishable by the law. Other than this, there are no conservation efforts being implemented for the species. It is not known from any protected areas or ex situ collections.
