Areca caliso is primarily threatened by land conversion and habitat degradation caused by commodity-driven deforestation, shifting cultivation, urbanization and mining. A significant loss of natural forests (1,855 ha) was reported across its range based on the analysis of data from the Global Forest Watch (2019). Aside from this anthropogenic disturbance, Brotonegoro (2000) recorded diseases (yellow leaf disease, fruit rot, foot rot and inflorescence dieback and button shedding) common to Areca palms that may also threaten the species.

The species was included in the DAO 2017-11 or the Updated National List of Threatened Species in the Philippines as Near Threatened (DENR 2017). Through this administrative order pursuant to Republic Act no. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, illegal and excessive tampering of the species from its natural habitats, together with other species specified therein, are inhibited. Its unauthorized utilization, trade, and disturbances made in its natural habitats are punishable by the law. Some subpopulations of the species are within protected areas such as in Bulusan Volcano Natural Park and Mount Apo National Park. These parks are protected through the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS Act). Aside from this, no other known conservation strategies are being implemented for the species.
