The species occurs in shallow ephemeral ponds on lateritic plateaus which are used by local communities. The use is mostly domestic, including washing clothes, which adds chemical detergents negatively affecting the water quality. The species is able to grow in rice field habitats adjacent to the natural ponds, but this does not reduce the local threats that arise due to present domestic use or future land-use changes. Expansion of the national highway right beside the Dhargal subpopulation and infrastructure growth due to an airport nearby is a potential threat that can wipe out the entire sub-population completely. The Karel sub-population is close to a nuclear power plant under construction. An oil refinery and associated infrastructure is also proposed on this plateau. The entire area is facing land acquisition and ongoing urbanization and the sub-population is also likely to be threatened in near future. The population in Karnataka also faces threats due to land-use change and infrastructure development apart from the threat posed by domestic use of pond water.
