There are two known subpopulations of this species. The most recent collection was made in 2000 from Anove River, near to, but outside the Mananara Nord National Park and Biosphere Reserve, and the other in 1991 within the protected area.(Madagascar Catalogue, 2016).

The species is threatened by secondary impacts resulting from degradation or destruction of surrounding terrestrial habitat due to shifting agriculture, logging and wood harvesting. These impacts include: loss of shade, fluctuation of temperatures, sedimentation, changed water quality, increased impacts from humans and grazing livestock. The species may also be threatened with destruction and disturbance resulting from fishing activities in the streams and rivers it inhabits.
