This species is said to be rare and only found in Colombia (Arango 1990). There is an inferred decline in the population due to pressures on the habitat from agricultural developments such as pineapple and pine plantations, as well as trail clearance and impacts from tourism and recreation (N. Salinas et al. pers. comm. 2021).

This genus, commonly called, 'Tulip Orchids', is popular with specialist collectors (N. Salinas et al. pers. comm. 2021). CITES data indicates that this species is traded internationally, although specimens appear to come from artificial propagation. The species' native range is known to occur within an area popular for tourism and recreation and has thus experienced associated infrastructural developments. In addition, there is deforestation in this region due to agriculture development (pineapple and pine plantations) (N. Salinas et al. pers. comm. 2021).

This species' range may overlap with the Paramo del Duende and Rio Bravo protected areas. It is known from at least ten ex situ collections (BGCI 2020). Two other species from the same genus have seeds collected and stored as part of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership (Genesys 2020), and the seed storage behaviour is predicted to be orthodox (Wyse and Dickie 2018), therefore seed collecting for ex situ storage is also recommended. It was rated as Endangered in the Lista Roja de Plantas de Colombia (Calderon-Saenz, 2006). Research is recommended to establish the current population size, distribution and trends, as well as to measure the impact of current threats.
