The population of Angraecum elephantinum is currently thought to be decreasing since the species habitat is threatened by forest clearing due to mining activities and forest degradation by selective logging timber harvesting for small-scale subsistence, and slash-and-burn practices (tavy). The number of mature individuals of A. elephantinum is not known and cannot be estimated as it is an epiphyte growing at breast height on trees.

The species experiences continuing decline in EOO, AOO, habitat extent and quality, the number of subpopulations, and the number of mature individuals by the forest clearing due to mining activities, and forest degradation due to selective logging, timber harvesting for small-scale subsistence, and slash-and-burn practices (tavy).

Two collections (two occurrences) have been recorded in Anjozorobe-Angavo protected area. Several individuals of the species have been brought to cultivation in the Antananarivo shade house. It is recorded in twelve ex situ sites worldwide (BGCI 2021). Ex situ conservation is recommended (micro-propagation, seed banking, and living collections). The species should be included in the list of Malagasy protected species. Further awareness building is recommended for local communities and national authorities. The species is included in CITES Appendix II but should be in Annex I
