This species is known from seven herbarium specimens collected between 1940 and 2001. However, no numerical population information is available, and the current trend is unknown.

This species occurs in Ethiopia (Tigray, Oromiya and Benishangul-Gumuz Regions) and Uganda (Northern Region). In the Tigray Region, it has been collected from two localities, near Inda Selassie and Addi Arkai. Some potentially suitable forested habitat remains at the collection site at Addi Arkay, but this is largely restricted to steep slopes and church forests (Google Earth 2023). However, extensive human settlements and agricultural fields are visible around the Inda Selassie site, and these reach the altitude of 1,800 m that this species was collected from (Google Earth 2023). The final collection site in Ethiopia, in the Oromiya Region, was collected from the Bore-Anferara National Forest Priority Area. However, this area remains poorly protected, and all natural habitats remain highly threatened and reduced to small, fragmented patches (One Earth 2023). Agricultural encroachment is the main threat in the area, along with logging and overgrazing (Google Earth 2023, One Earth 2023). Large areas of Bore-Anferara forest have been converted to farmland (Woldearegay and Woldu 2020). The final locality for this species is the Napak Forest Reserve in the Northern Region of Uganda. This seems to be relatively secure, with the soils being unsuitable for agriculture and the high altitudes inaccessible (Rugadya and Kamusiime 2013).

There are no known ex situ conservation sites for this species, but it is listed in CITES Appendix II (BGCI 2023). The species occurs within the Bore-Anferara National Forest Priority Area in Ethiopia, although this remains highly threatened with little management, and the Napak Forest Reserve in Uganda (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023, BirdLife International 2024).
