The overall population size of this species is unknown due to lack of available information. It is known only from six collections made between 1950 and 1985 and one collection from 1994. Although Berghen (collector number 7540) described it as frequent in 1985 in Santiaba Mandjak, Senegal it is suspected that it might not be the case anymore as no recent collections from this species were found, and a population decline is suspected, based on habitat loss.

This grass grows in humid coastal grasslands which are threatened by agriculture, fishing and livestock grazing (Adams 1993). The coastal areas of Guinea are high populated with more than 400 inhabitants per km2 living around the coastal cities of Conakry, Kamsar and Kindia compared to less than 20 inhabitants per km2 in rural areas (USAID 2007), while in Senegal 80% of the population is concentrated within 200 km from the coast (UNEP 2008). Satellite imagery shows urban development, rice cultivation and other agriculture in Senegal where this species was previously collected, and it is possible that its distribution within the area is much more restricted now. In Guinea, it is also visible from satellite imagery large cultivated areas in Youkounkoun, as well as in Isles Tristao although at a smaller scale.

This species is known to occur in Iles Tristao Ramsar Site (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2018). However, small villages and agriculture are visible from satellite imagery inside this area. No information on ex situ conservation measures was found. Research is recommended to establish the current population size, distribution and trends.
