The original publication (Holttum 1950) notes that the species was "not infrequent" in the type location. The large portion of converted land in the district does however suggest that the population is declining.

Most, if not all, of the natural forest has been converted in Kemaman district (GFW 2019). Malaysia is one of the largest producers of palm oil, for which natural habitat is converted (Theo 2002).
