According to data collected by Llorens and Rosselló (2004) from a 2001 census, the estimated population consists of about 100 individuals, including non-reproductive. The last census found 369 inflorescences (Saéz et al. 2015). It is not clear if this apparent increase is real or the result of annual variation or an artefact of changes to survey methodology or timing, however the population is inferred to be declining as a result of the described threats.

The main risk for this species is the low number of breeding individuals, which was less than 50 in 2002. Also, several other factors can seriously compromise the survival of the species. Among these are the predation (leaves and inflorescences) by wild herbivores mainly goats, alteration of habitat (garbage and debris from nearby radar installations) and periods of drought, which also affect the mortality, and do not allow the development of inflorescences.
