This species is known only from six herbarium specimens collected between 1958 and 2007. Phillips (1995) describes the species as 'locally abundant'. However, the major peaks of the Simien Mountains have been well-surveyed and the species has been recorded there only once. Similarly at the collecting locality which is furthest south in the Bale Mountains, Friis #5721, the species was not observed to be common. There are no further data relating to population numbers but the population trend is suspected to be declining as the area of grassland habitat in the Bale Mountains has been reduced by 9.36% between 1985 and 2017 (Annissa and Eyasu 2021).

This species has five locations with the major threats considered to be habitat conversion to agriculture and settlement. The area of grassland habitat in the Bale Mountains, where most herbarium specimens have been collected, declined by 9.36% between 1985 and 2017, whereas the area of farmland increased by 43.67% in the same period (Annissa and Eyasu 2021). The same study found that the grassland habitat had also become more fragmented. At Dinsho in the Bale Mountains and at Debre Birhan the species is threatened by settlement expansion. The location in the Simien Mountains appears to be less threatened than the other locations, although satellite imagery reveals that agriculture is present in the vicinity of the collecting locality. As the species occurs primarily in Afroalpine environments, climate change is likely to be affecting it, although in what way is not known.

This species has been collected from both the Bale Mountains and Simien Mountains National Parks (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023) but is not known to be in ex situ conservation (BGCI 2023). Research is needed to obtain population data and to ascertain whether this grass species can persist in agricultural landscapes.
