Two or three subpopulations of this species are known (S. Carter pers. comm.). One is located on the slopes of the pass which crosses the mountains between Erigavo and Mait. The species was seen in 1995 in considerable numbers (Thulin 1998).

Threats to Aloe eminens stem from deforestation and resulting habitat degradation. The forests in the Al Madu range are reported to have been severely degraded in the past (Thulin 1994).

Aloe eminens was last collected in 1995 in the eastern part of the Al Madu Range. There are no protected areas in Somalia, but the species is in cultivation at RBG Kew.
