The species is threatened in Malawi by habitat loss, medicinal use and its small distribution range (Klopper et al. 2012). However, the species is widespread and has a relatively large range; and while it is possibly declining in parts of it, it is not thought that any global population decline is likely to meet (or be close to meeting) the threshold for Vulnerable.

The species has been collected in the Mbizi Forest Reserve (GBIF 2019); and it is present in three ex situ collections (BGCI 2019). This aloe is included in the Appendix II of CITES (2019).
This species has previously been assessed for Malawi as Least Concern, in the Southern African Plant Red Data Lists (2002); and has subsequently been listed as Vulnerable for Malawi by Klopper et al. (2012).
