This species is mainly found in rocky habitats in mainly inaccessible areas and therefore there are limited threats. Cole and Forrest stated that this species was not threatened for this reason (Cole and Forrest 2017). Some subpopulations, such as those near Lorengedwat in Uganda may be threatened by encroachment for settlement and livestock grazing. However, the majority of subpopulations are not impacted by these threats. With seven locations documented should threats be found the species would qualify for VU.

This species is found in one protected area, the Pian Upe Game Reserve in Uganda. In 2003 there was a government proposal to degazette this game reserve in the Karamoja region, however, following contests by civil society this proposal did not go through (Twesigye 2008). There is ex situ conservation of this species in 14 botanic gardens (BGCI 2019). This species is listed in CITES Appendix II.
