This species is only known from the type locality (Castillon 2008). Jean-Bernard Castillon, who had described the species, went back to the area in 2014, and found the degradation had extended almost along the whole locality, and only some mature individuals remained.

The species is not present in any protected areas, nor in ex situ collections. It is recommended that ex situ conservation measures are carried out in order to be able to conduct a possible reintroduction if needed in the future. Sustainable livelihoods research is also recommended to allow the recovery of these areas. This species is listed in CITES Appendix II (CITES 2019).
