The species is very frequent near the Atlantic coast (Carter et al. 2001). According to reports, this aloe occurs in its thousands on the open gravel flats from Swakopmund northwards to Kaokoland (Müller 1985). This species is also reported as common on the Namibian mountains by Moisel and Moll (1981), together with other plants of the family such as Aloidendron dichotomum and Aloe namibensis.

Specific threats to this species are currently unknown. Habitat destruction due to tourism may be a potential threat for similar species (as Aloe namibensis) in Namibia, but this could not be confirmed (Loots 2005). Some plants in the same family have shown to be sensitive to climate change effects; for example the Quiver Tree's populations (Aloidendron dichotomum) also in Namibia, are dying in the northern part of their range as the area experiences more drought conditions (Lovett 2007, Foden et al. 2007).

The species is present in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. In the long term, climate change may pose a threat to this species, hence regular monitoring is required to determine if there are indications of population decline or range shift. This species is included in CITES Appendix II. The species is grown in ex situ cultivation at 16 sites (BGCI 2018).
