The main threat to this species is habitat loss due to agriculture mainly of cassava, maize and sweet potato.

This species occurs in three protected areas Cap Saint Marie, Mahafaly Plateau and Onilahy Complex. It is present in 28 botanical gardens world wide (BGCI 2018) and in several botanical gardens in Madagascar. Seeds of this species are kept in the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK and in the National seed bank in Madagascar. This species is listed in CITES Appendix II (CITES 2019).
