Aloe ankoberensis occurs at a density of 2-10 mature individuals per 500 m²; and subpopulations are small (Sebsebe Demissew field observation).

A. ankoberensis grows on very steep cliffs in forested areas. The forests in this area are threatened by encroaching agriculture, deforestation, fire and overgrazing (Teketay and Bekele 2008). A decrease in forest cover will result in erosion and changes to the watershed area.

The localities where A. ankoberensis has been collected fall just outside the Wof-Washa National Forest Priority Area; but is is possible that the species occurs in similar habitats within this protected area. The species is not known to be in cultivation at a botanic garden (BGCI).
